Sucker Punch

Took the big  boy to the Queens theatre in Hornchurch for a fab and slightly disturbing play called Sucker Punch.

It is loosely based on the rivalry between Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno (or so I thought) I say that because the play’s author Roy Williams comes on to my page occasionally to pick fights and practice his craft lol

The play is about acceptance, loyalty,  and betrayal; making it the edgiest play I have dared to see with my 13year old and prompting some challenging conversations in the car [on the way home] about Racism and Sex 😳

For OG’s like me it is a reminder of how language and public attitudes have changed.  It was so overt and uncomfortable to watch but what is was like back then. Talking to the young cast, I was heartened by how challenging they found it.  Stylistically fabulous, I wholeheartedly endorse the play as a way to do what I believe all art should do; as well as making you uncomfortable, make you laugh, think and reflect.

Like a lot of Roy’s work, I think it will ultimately thrive as a learning tool in a safe environment but if you can, head to the theatre and lemme know what you think.

I am not even getting into how white women are referenced  in the piece. Let’s just say it puts political correctness on the ropesSUCKER PUNCH will open at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 30 March 2023 before embarking on a national tour of New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich, Curve Theatre Leicester, The Lowry Salford, Key Theatre Peterborough, Queen’s Theatre Barnstaple, Theatre Royal Wakefield, Cast Doncaster, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre and The Fire Station Sunderland.
