The Giants of Lovers Rock are a group of legendary artists who have played a significant role in the development and popularity of the Lovers Rock genre. Lovers Rock is a subgenre of reggae that originated in the UK in the 1970s and gained popularity in the 1980s. It is characterized by its romantic lyrics, soulful melodies, and smooth reggae rhythms.
The Concert series which debuted in 2010 has featured over 150 artistes including some of the biggest names in the genre including, Janet Kay MBE, Carroll Thompson & Dennis Bovell. Each artiste performing has had a successful solo career in their own right, but together all on one night on one stage they are a force to be reckoned with.
Janet Kay is a singer who is best known for her hit single “Silly Games,” which became a chart-topping success in the UK in 1979. Carroll Thompson is a singer and songwriter who has released several successful albums, including “Hopelessly in Love” and “Carroll Thompson Live.” Dennis Bovell is a singer, songwriter, and producer who has worked with a wide range of artists, including Linton Kwesi Johnson, The Slits, and Madness.
Together, with over 20 other acts performing on the night, the Giants of Lovers Rock have created a timeless sound and experience that has influenced countless other artists over the decades and continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
