I’m told that Boris Johnson is especially clever.
I remember after an “interesting” interview many years ago, when campaigning to be Mayor of London, he asked me why people were so upset that he had referred to people of colour as #pickeninnies with #watermelonsmiles. I did try to explain it to him. He listened and nodded, like you do someone speaking a different language.
We shook hands and he left. I’ve asked (for an interview) on and off for the past decade but he has NEVER come back.
Educated at Eton and then Oxford, the twice Mayor of London rose to one of the Great Offices Of State, from which he resigned over disagreements on Brexit. I understand he still has ambitions for high office. So what exactly is at play here?
Whilst we are focussed on the “letterbox” and “bank robber” lines, the article was actually about NOT banning the veil, like some European countries have.
So if he is as clever as people say, he will have worked out that there would be a reaction, wouldn’t he? Many people have found his words offensive but… No apology has (so far) been forthcoming.
Wouldn’t a comparison with a nun be more accurate than a bank robber?
Is he the Donald Trump of British politics? What would it say about British politics if there were no sanctions? What would it say if there were? We are living in “interesting” times and we will have a much clearer idea of our future when the dust settles and we find out if the Tories have a problem with Muslims, the way Labour appear to with Jews.
After taking numerous calls, texts and emails on this subject, I’m left to wonder why we Brits feel uncomfortable with anything or anyone who is different. How can they be Brits if they don’t look, act or in this case dress like us?
Yes, “interesting” times indeed.
